What is Happiness?

Is there any answer to define real happiness? The people define happiness in many different ways. Success, lots lots of $$$$, job achievements, family, travelling, wealth , 5 Cs etc? They have full liberty to do whatever they want as long as they don't break laws.
Singapore does not have a "happy" culture. We were told to study hard to earn a good living. Work to live? Live to work? Work to spend? No one teaches us the importance of happiness. All the advertisements make the
public spend money on luxury homes, beauty, branded goods, fine food and wine.
They empty our pockets, leaving us BROKE!
Should we be contented with simple lifestyle in fast-paced, competitive society like Singapore? My question is how to be contented in this such society?
To you, what is the key to happiness? Knowing what we really want regardless of circumstances, environment, laws?

Maybe the secret to contentment is to not search for it? =)
